With the carpet and new baseboards installed, the sports-den remodel moves forward with some electrical accessories. In this segment, a ceiling fan and decorative light fixtures are installed. Safety Alert: Before you begin any work that involves electrical wiring, always turn off the main breaker that supplies electricity to the circuit where you'll be working. If you don't feel comfortable with doing electrical work, you may want to consider hiring a licensed electrician. Safety Alert: Always wear eye protection, and follow proper safety precautions, when working with power tools and pneumatic tools.
Ceiling Fan Installation
Our ceiling fan came as a kit that included parts and mounting hardware. It was installed at an existing ceiling-light receptacle. Important: There may be variations in installation procedures depending on the make and model of the fan you select. Read and follow the manufacturer's instructions and diagrams that come with the fan you select.
- Turn the power off at the circuit breaker. To be extra safe, use a circuit tester to be absolutely sure that no power is being supplied to the electrical connections (figure A).
- Check the parts included in the kit (figure B), and familiarize yourself with the parts and the directions.
- Install the fan mounting-bracket (figure C) by securing it in position using the mounting screws provided in the kit.
- Suspend the fan-motor from the mounting bracket.
- With the bracket installed, follow the wiring directions to make the appropriate electrical connections (figure D). In our case, the green wires are connected for the ground connection, the white wires are connected for the neutral line and the black and blue wires are connected for the power supply -- i.e., the "hot" connection.
- Slide the cover into position and secure it with the screws provided (figure E).
- Carefully assemble the fan blades. To speed up the process, we used a cordless drill with a screwdriver fitting.
- Attach each of the blades to the motor (figure F), according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Install the pull-chain onto the switch.
- Turn the power back on and check the fan for proper operation.
Decorative Light Fixture
To provide additional lighting, wall-mounted light fixtures were installed. In keeping with the sports theme of this remodel, the fixtures were modified by installing a baseball on the shaft of the light fixture. Important: There may be variations in installation procedures depending on the make, style and model of the light fixture you select. Read and follow the manufacturer's instructions and diagrams that come with the one you select.
- Once the power has been turned off at the breaker panel, decide on a suitable location for your light fixture (with access to existing or installed wiring) and cut out a hole for the light box using a drywall saw (figure G).
- Pull the wiring through the hole. Pop out the back holes of the junction box and feed the wires through.
- Fasten the junction box in the hole using the mounting screws provided.
- With the junction box installed, use wire strippers to strip each wire enough to make the necessary connections (figure H).
- Install the mounting plate for the light fixture (figure I) according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Push the wires back out of the way, and install the light fixture onto the mounting bracket (figure J). Secure it with the screws or bolts provided.
- To dress up our light switch, we drilled a hole through a regulation-sized baseball using a cordless drill and a large drill-bit. The ball was then slid onto the shaft of the light fixture.
- With the fixture completely installed, and the wiring connections made, install the bulb and shade (figure K).
In the segment that follows, the final touches are added to the sports den in the form of wall decoration, new window treatments, furniture and accessories.
