In this episode of DIY's Major League Remodel workshop, host Denny Janson visits the Orlando, Florida home of Red Sox outfielder Johnny Damon to convert a seldom-used boathouse to a sophisticated sports den.

Johnny's objective was to create a comfortable environment suitable for entertaining or just relaxing. In terms of atmosphere and deco, Johnny wanted rich walls, lots of texture and a masculine feel. He wanted to incorporate a baseball theme and some career momentos into the design and decorating scheme while maintaining a visual look that fits with waterfront setting and the existing nautical/fishing motif.

In this segment, a plan is sketched out, the old worn-out carpet is removed and the old baseboards are taken out.

    Prep Work

    Materials:

    Hammer
    Pry bar
    Utility knife
    Knee pads

    Steps:

    • The boathouse (figure A) sits on a waterway behind Johnny's home, and is connected to the shore by a boardwalk. It is structurally sound, but hasn't been used a great deal.

    • A simple software program was used to plan the redesign of the space and create a new floor plan (figure B). There are a number of these programs now available, and most are inexpensive, self-explanatory and easy to use.

    • If the computer version is not an option for you, a few simple sketches (figure C) can serve the same basic purpose.

    • Trying out a wide variety of carpet samples helped ensure that the carpets selected were a good fit for the rooms and the overall feel of the location.

    • A few days before the heavy work got underway, Johnny removed all of the existing furnishings and painted the walls in a muted blue-green color. The ceiling was given a fresh coat of white paint. Johnny also removed the old window treatments that were ordinary slat-blinds.

    • Pry bars were used to pull up the old carpet (figure D), which was then rolled up and removed.

    • The old baseboards were removed next, using the pry bar and hammer (figure E).

    • With the old carpets and baseboards removed, the newly painted space (figure F) is now prepped for the remodel.

In the segment that follows, the new baseboards and carpet are installed.
