With the baseball wall-treatments complete and the bunk beds installed, the next portion of the kids'-room makeover is the installation of locker-room style storage. Earlier, the doors were removed from the existing closet. Lockers will be installed in the closet space, and the outer walls and trim will be painted in a matching color.

Safety Alert: Always wear eye protection, and follow proper safety precautions, when working with power tools.

    Kids' "Locker-Room" Storage

    • The walls of the "locker room" section are painted using a special magnetic paint. This specialized paint is available through paint suppliers and contains tiny magnetic metal filings that allow metal decorative objects to stick to the wall magnetically. The magnetic paint is applied to the walls like a primer and dries in 24 hours. Additional coats of the paint will increase the magnetic strength and sticking power.

    • Once the magnetic paint has been applied, it can be painted over with ordinary wall paint (figure A). We selected a red paint to match the red lockers that are being installed. Be sure to protect adjacent borders, trim, etc. with masking tape.

    • Apply paint to the wall spaces using a paint roller, and to painted trim using a small brush.

    • Once the painting is complete, the lockers can be installed (figure B). The eight-locker unit was measured to ensure a good fit in the existing space. Lockers like the ones that Ken and Denny installed can be purchased from warehouse outlet stores, or you may be able to find used ones when schools or health clubs are replacing their lockers.

    • Once the lockers were installed, each one was personalized with the name of one of Ken's grandchildren (figure C).

    • The lockers were then decorated with a wide assortment of baseball-related images and memorabilia (figure D).

    • The finished storage lockers (figure E) provide each of the kids with their own personal storage space.

    • For authenticity, padlocks were installed on each of the lockers (figure F ). Ken, however, kept a key-storage system with keys to each lock stored safely on hooks.

In the segment that follows, the finishing touches are added to the kids' room.
