The by-products produced are carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide can cause headaches, tightness of forehead or temple, weakness, loss of muscular control -- even death. Because carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless and tasteless, install carbon monoxide detectors in every room a gas appliance is located. Be sure to check the detectors regularly.
Making Combustion Appliances Healthier- Vent every combustion appliance to the outside.
- For gas ranges, consider an electric starter to emit fewer gases than continuously burning pilot lights.
- Consider the installation of an exhaust fan that vents to the outside -- or a downdraft fan that can remove smoke.
- Slightly open a window while using exhaust hood of gas stove.
- Have furnaces professionally inspected and install safety devices on flues to automatically shut off gas if flue gets clogged.
