One of the best ways to control the moisture and environmental pollutants that can enter your home is to do it from the ground up -- during the building phase. Through careful selection of the best home site, you can often eliminate or minimize allergens, mold and exposure to natural gases, pesticides and herbicides.

Here, host Fuad Reveiz shares a few of the things to consider:- Sources of pollution: Look for nearby factories, waste dumps, farms and golf courses (sources of pesticides and herbicides). Also, consider if the road near your site has heavy traffic and the potential for exhaust pollution.
- Neighborhood restrictions: Check to see if your neighborhood association has strict guidelines in place regarding the use of lawn chemicals.
- Site topography: The slope of your site has a lot to do with creating a healthy home. The right slope and proper drainage can draw water away from your foundation. Water that flows toward your house and collects near the foundation can cause mold and wood rot.
- Vegetation: Be sure to avoid a building site with lots of plants and trees if you are highly allergic.
