  • Case of the Singing Sink: Replacing the Toilet's Fill Valve and Flapper
  • A self-motivating toilet receives new parts to discourage its independence.
    From "Finders Fixers"
    episode DFFX-101

Host and home inspector Rick Yerger shows homeowners Joan May and Curt Lamond how to battle their singing sink. He demonstrates how to test and replace an angle stop valve and clean and repack faucet valve stems. With some trial and error, these steps silence the singing sink. He also shows Curt how to stop a leak in another bathroom sink -- a few well placed turns of a packing nut and no more leak (saving the homeowners the cost of a plumbing service call).

    Materials:

    2 crescent wrenches
    bucket and rags
    fill valve
    flapper

    1. First, turn the water supply off (located below and behind the tank). Drain the water from the tank into a bucket and disconnect the water supply line. Discard the drained water from the tank and replace the bucket (or rags) beneath the tank to protect from spills (figure A).

    2. Remove the internal flapper covering the orifice where the water exits from the tank (figure B).

    3. To remove the gasket underneath the fill tube, first remove the tank from the bowl. Unscrew the bolts that hold the tank to the bowl using two wrenches, one to hold the nuts underneath the tank and one to unscrew the screws from inside the tank. The tank is lifted off and the remaining parts are removed (figure C).

    4. The old gasket is removed and replaced with a new gasket -- follow manufacturer's instructions to make sure it goes on straight and does not cross-thread. (figure D).

    5. Replace the tank on the bowl and secure in place with the existing bolts.

    6. Next, install the new fill valve, making sure the new one matches the same model as the old valve. The valve is secured with a lock nut under the tank and a flexible tube connects the tank's overflow pipe. The flapper is attached last, again, following the manufacturer's specifications (figure E).
