Host Ed Del Grande explains how to install a pumping system that will clear out your dehumidifier's bucket so that it will work more efficiently.
Materials:drill with paddle bit set condensate pump with manufacturer's instructions 3/8" flexible pipe 3/4" PVC pipe and fitting zip ties
Tips from Ed- Locate your sump (figure A) which is where your condensate pump will empty. A sump is like a pit, or floor drain with gravel in the bottom.
- In a wet situation, you'll have a sump pump to discharge the water, but in some cases, you'll have a gravity drain.
- Proper placement of the dehumidifier is important. You'll want to make sure it's out of heavy traffic areas and that there's at least one foot of clearance around the entire unit.
- Also, don't place it in a room that will be shut-off from the remainder of the house. Rooms that are closed up, like closets and bathrooms should be vented to benefit from the dehumidifier.
- The location of the dehumidifier should be air tight; you don't want open air supplies to push moist air in.
- You'll need at least two outlets. Be sure to check the manufacturer's instructions to ensure that your circuit breaker has enough power to run the dehumidifier. Most dehumidifiers require a 20-amp breaker.
- Most units will have a bucket located underneath the unit. Some dehumidifiers work with a short section of hose that is connected directly to the unit and drains the water out.
