    Host Ed Del Grande explains how the last steps to installing a new water heater.

    Materials:

    CPVC pipe and adaptor
    CPVC primer and cement
    Pipe cutter

    1. Have a licensed electrician re-attach the electrical connections.

    2. Make and install a tailpiece to add to the pressure relief valve (figure A) on your new water heater.

    Making a Tailpiece:

    1. Purchase CPVC pipe and a male adaptor that will fit the pressure relief valve on the water heater.

      Tip: make sure the CPVC pipe is rated for hot water.

    2. Cut the pipe to size. It should be long enough to reach into the drip pan.

    3. Apply CPVC primer to the pipe and adaptor, then apply CPVC cement.

    4. Insert the male adaptor on one end of the pipe (figure B).

    5. Next, screw the tailpiece into the relief valve.

    6. Open up the safety valve (figure C) on the water heater to allow cold water to fill the tank.

    7. Turn the water back on at the main.

    8. Fill up the tank with water.
