    Once you've prepped the area, it's time to install the new water heater.

    Materials:

    Safety goggles
    Flux and solder
    Half-inch copper pipe
    Assortment of adapters
    Isolation valve
    Teflon paste
    Adjustable wrench
    Tape measure
    New water heater
    Drip pan

    1. Shut off the water pump and remove.

    2. If you don't already have one in place, install an isolation valve (figure A) on each water line. This will allow you to shut off the water to the tank without turning it off at the main.

    3. Place a drip pan (figure B) in the floor where the tank will be installed. A drip pan will collect any water that may leak from the tank.

    4. Unpack the new water heater, then set into place inside the drip pan.

    5. Use basic soldering techniques to solder (figure C) the new sections of pipe and fittings to connect the new water heater to the existing incoming and outgoing water lines.

    6. Apply Teflon paste to the connections on the tank.

    7. Attach a female adaptor to the first connection (figure D), then tighten. Repeat for the second connection.
