Host Ed Del Grande explains how to set up an area for installing an outdoor water pump.Materials:

4 cap blocks
Pump and manufacturers instruction manual
Cover for pump
Before purchasing a pump, take time to find out the length and degree of rise to the pump site for the intake and discharge lines. This information is necessary for the pump to work properly in your location. You will need to run power to the pump site. Generally, the electrical and plumbing lines should be buried in separate trenches. Check your local electrical codes.
Also, it's a good idea to build some type of weatherproof shelter to keep the elements away from the pump unit.
Setting the foundation:
- First, establish where the intake or foot valve should be located and where the pump needs to be installed.
- Next, build a stable base for the pump using several four-inch cap blocks to create a stable foundation (figure A). Then, set the pump in place.
