• It's best to use lead free solder when soldering pipes. You don't want lead to get into your water system.

• There are several types of torches available. Make sure you get one that is easy to use like a torch that will clip onto your belt (figure A), freeing up a hand.

• Where safety glasses when soldering.

• When heating up the pipe with a torch, watch for the pipe to change colors. That's how you know it's hot enough to start soldering.

• Wipe away any dripping solder.
