Installing the FixturesBefore any fixtures can be installed our homeowners (Brad and Lynn Oberg) must decide where each is going to be located, which was done earlier in the construction process -- called the "rough-in" stage. Note: For more information on this rough-in stage and placement of fixtures, see Episode 110. After all the fixtures placements have been determined and all the lines have been run, the walls are closed up (figure A), and the fixtures can be installed.
Fixture Problems Arise- When it's time to install the fixture for the kitchen island (figure B), there's a problem. The pre-cut holes in the countertop don't align with the opening in the cabinet. Since this means modifications will have to be made to the cabinet, Brad is called in to make a decision.
In order to make enough space to accommodate the faucet, Brad agrees to cut the depth of the shelf in half, which will make the area of Lynn's cookbooks a lot smaller. The plumber cuts a hole (figure C) to accommodate the faucet. - In the master bathroom the opening, which has been cut into the countertop, is too large for the sink (figure D). The question for Brad to answer -- is the hole too big or the sink too small?
Brad goes with the sink being too small and has to call the manufacturer to see why the size "doesn't" match the template. He repacked the sink and sent it back in return for a larger one.
Fire-Protection Sprinkler SystemLess than two percent of homes in America have a sprinkler system, but our homeowners wanted to have the added security in the unfortunate case of a fire. "Lynn and I had a decision to make," Brad said, "and do we want to put sprinkler heads in the ceiling." The couple weren't quite sure at first but after some consideration and once they saw how small (figure E) the heads were, they decided to go with the fire-protection system. "We decided safety over aesthetics and not much of a sacrifice on aesthetics," Brad added. Brad and Lynn decided to go with the AQUASAFE® fire-protection system, and you can find out more about this technology under resources (Residential Sprinkler System and Radiant Flooring), below. In the next segment we check out the high-tech water heater and radiant floor heating system in the Oberg home.
