Old tomato-red cabinets are brought back to life by stenciling on a little international flair. This trellis pattern is common in Indonesia; it gives the kitchen an exotic and outdoorsy feel.
The cabinet hardware is removed from the doors. Diagonal lines are cut into a piece of poster board to make the stencil template. Painters tape is used to create a border around the edge of the cabinet doors. The template is then taped onto door.

Blot excess paint off the brush.

Just a small amount of paint is needed to create the pattern. The stencil brush is dipped in the paint and then blotted on a paper towel to take the excess paint off the brush. The stencil template is further pressed down by hand while the paint is dabbed on.
When the first set of stripes are done and the paint has dried, the stencil template is flipped over to paint the second set of stripes. When the second set is complete, the template is pulled off to reveal the lattice pattern.
A thin border is painted around the outside of the lattice design, along the edge of the tape. To complete the design, a clover leaf is stenciled onto every other intersection.
To protect the Indonesian-inspired design, a coat of protective varnish is rolled onto the cabinet doors.
