Shannon Kaye helps a new homeowner surprise her husband by turning their finished basement into a place for entertaining. They use a faux-finish techniques on the walls of one part to define it for use as a wine-tasting area, complete with custom-painted wine-storage cubes.

Then they use decorative painting to transform an ordinary coffee table into a colorful and very contemporary accent piece. Here's how to make one like it:

    1. Spray the coffee table with primer. Be sure to work in a well-ventilated area and wear a mask.

    2. Once the primer has dried, apply the base coat of brown paint all over the table.

    3. After the brown paint is dry, use painter's tape to mask off 2 inches around the edge of the table top to create a border. Paint the area inside the tape light blue. Let it dry completely.

    4. While you're waiting for the table to dry, make the stencil for the polka dot pattern. Trace around a large soup can to create circles on a piece of poster board, then cut out the circles. Be careful to keep the edges of the circles clean and sharp.

    5. To add the polka dots to the table, just lay the poster-board stencil on the table top. You can use painter's tape to hold it steady. Dip a stencil sponge into the paint and wipe off any excess. Then just dab the paint onto the table top, starting at the middle of each circle.
