  • Santa Fe Sitting Room: Painting the Ceiling Fan
  • The project is completed by painting the ceiling fan.
    From "Fresh Coat"
    episode DFCT-201

    Figure A
The renovation of the sitting room is almost complete: the walls have been painted and textured, the coffee table has a fresh new look and the fireplace brick has been aged to perfection. All that's left of this renovation is a new look for the ceiling fan.

The old ceiling fan is too mundane to go with the new colors of the room. It needs a new look, one that is rustic and reminiscent of old metal. This new look is achieved in three steps (figure A).

    Materials:

    face masks
    clear primer spray can
    brush
    iridescent stainless acrylic
    paper towels
paint (Benjamin Moore Terra Mauve 105)
    bowl

    1. Clear primer is sprayed over the fan blades (make sure to wear a face mask for this step) (figure B).

    2. Dark iridescent stainless-steel acrylic paint is brushed on the blades and pushed or textured into the blades with a crumpled paper towel to create the look of old rusty metal (figure C).

    3. The ceiling fan glass globe is painted with Terra Mauve acrylic paint to give the glass a warm amber glow when lit (figure D).

Now all that's left to do is put the room back together and admire the new look. Even with great bones and cool furniture, the plain white walls left the room cold and uninviting. The new look of the room, with its earthy colors and textures, is both warm and cozy. In fact, it's so inviting Molly and Peter may never want to leave home (figure E) (figure F) (figure G) (figure H).
