  • Santa Fe Sitting Room: Wall Troweling and Coffee-Table Makeover
  • The second phase of the Santa Fe sitting room transformation begins.
    From "Fresh Coat"
    episode DFCT-201

    (Continued from page 1)

    4. The final step involves the application of a translucent flat wax over the paint to achieve a lustrous finish to the paint and highlight the wall texture. The wax is first tinted with Mystic Gold paint before being loaded on a trowel in small amounts just as the paint was previously loaded (figure F) (figure G).

    5. The wax is applied to the walls much like a cake is frosted. The trowel is first pulled down the wall to apply the wax, then run horizontally across the vertical stripe to spread the wax across the wall (figure H) (figure I).

    6. Next, the coffee table is lightly sanded with sandpaper to remove the shiny clear coat, creating a porous surface for a new coat of Rosemary Green paint. Dust left by sanding is removed with a sticky rag (figure J).

    7. When the paint is dry, a level is used as a guide to draw panel lines on the top of the painted table. Using an angled brush dipped in a dark brown (Mink) paint, irregular panel lines are painted over the pattern (figure K) (figure L).

    8. Steel wool, dipped in Tudor Brown furniture wax, is next applied in a circular pattern to the dry paint. The steel wool will scratch and remove some of the paint, giving the table an aged look.

    9. A soft, clean cloth is used to buff the painted surface to a smooth patina (figure M) (figure N).
