What happens when you mix a little paint with a few dollars and some creativity? You can create an entirely different look for any room in your house. With the help of host Shannon Kaye, this bland boring space is on its way to becoming a warm and rustic sitting room.
Homeowners Molly and Peter enjoy spending time at home, but they never seem to find themselves using their uninviting sitting room. Even with great bones, a working fireplace and lots of fun furnishings, the stark white walls of the room do not tie in to the colorful ambiance found throughout the rest of the house (figure A) (figure B). The new design plan includes retexturing the walls in keeping with the warm, desert-style theme found in the rest of the house; dry-brushing the fireplace with three shades of paint results in a time-aged look for the brick surface. Paint treatments for the coffee table and ceiling fan complete this rustic, inviting new look (figure C).

Paint budget: $240.Tools: rosin paper painter's tape brushes cutting brushes foam rollers paint trays paint mugs paint can visor Bridgewater Tan paint (Benjamin Moore 1096) 1. Brown kraft paper is laid down to protect the floors and painter's tape is taped along molding edges and the mantel edges (figure D). 2. Bridgewater Tan paint is applied to the walls, creating a neutral background for the wall treatment. Because this color is painted from the entryway into the room, a seamless transition will be created from the solid walls to the textured walls of the sitting room. The golden tan color will also complement the red walls in the adjoining room; earthy tones in shades of brown, yellow and orange would also complement the color scheme of the home (figure E) (figure F).
