Gold-Leafed Fireplace From "Fresh Coat" episode DFCT-106

A rich coat of paint and gold-leaf accents add a dash of panache to the Victorian-era fireplace.

Materials:

Latex eggshell paint (Sari Suit KM3534-2 from Kelly Moore, in this example)
Water-based Wunda Size
Gold leaf
Parchment paper
Paint brushes
Detailing brush
Aging glaze
Cheesecloth

1. Paint fireplace with latex paint in an eggshell finish (figure A).

   
   

2. Apply water-based size (figure B) to detailed parts of the fireplace (such as the gingerbread and floral medallion, in this example).

   
   

3. Apply gold-leaf over areas covered by size, then tap gold-leaf with detailed brush (figure C).

   
   

4. Pull parchment paper off and brush away any excess gold.

   
   

5. Apply aging glaze all over fireplace including gold leaf highlights and wipe off with cheesecloth to create definition (figure D).
