  • Palm Tree Mural and Tropical Accents
  • From "Fresh Coat"
    episode DFCT-101

    PHOTO
The breezy blue wall color isn't the only accent reminiscent of the tropics. With a few creative brushstrokes, host Steve Bell adds a palm tree, floral headboard and stamped accents to bring tropical flora and fauna to the décor.

    Materials:

Green, brown, and white paint (for palm tree and leaves)
    Bright paint (for flowering headboard)
    Artist's brushes
    Chalk
    Rubber stamp
Small amounts of colorful paint for rubber stamps
    Cheesecloth

    Palm Tree Mural

    1. First, paint the trunk, then lightly wipe the trunk from top to bottom using cheesecloth.

    2. Pull leaf from base to point in an arc using a smaller, flat brush. Use full width of brush to create texture. Pull leaf again using thin side of brush for texture.Using the flat edge will help you create the leaf fronds, while the thinner edge will help you create thinner, more-pointed leaves and center stems.

    Flowering Headboard

    1. Use chalk to draw vines, then paint over chalk lines using an artist's brush and green paint.

    2. Dip brush in green, then lightly dip in white. Paint leaf.

    3. Paint flower petals (in colors of choice) by giving the artist's brush a little twist.

    Stamped Accents

Host Steve Bull uses rubber stamps to add delightful butterflies and fun -- not ferocious -- lizards around the chalkboard doors.

    1. Dab painted on raised stamp motif, then press lightly on cardboard to remove an excess paint.

    2. Press firmly on wall, then pull away. Use paint marker to add details.
