  • Tropical Blue Walls
  • From "Fresh Coat"
    episode DFCT-101

Homeowners Rick and Kristen Addicks have two adorable children who actually prefer to share a bedroom. The room is painted with a basic white, and the couple would like to create an inspired, imaginative space to engage the siblings. Host Steve Bull has a suggestion: a tropical children's suite. He’ll teach the couple some new painting techniques to turn boring walls bright.

    Soft "Blue Sky" Walls

A ragging technique will be used create the "broken color" finish. This is done in three steps: first paint the edges (Rick's duty), roll the paint on (Kristen's part), then bunch cheesecloth to "pounce" across the surface (host Steve Bull) to remove small amounts of paint and allow the base color to show through.

    Materials:

    Dry paintbrushes
    Rollers
Painters tape (optional - masking gun, figure A)
    Drop cloth
Latex glazing liquid and base color
    Cheesecloth

    1. Dust off baseboards and trim with dry paint brush or vacuum.

    2. Mask baseboards and top trim with painter's tape and place drop cloth on floor.

    3. Mix latex glazing liquid with base paint color: 3 parts glaze to 1 part paint.

    4. Use brush to "trim out" the walls using the base coat glaze.

    5. Use a roller to apply base coat glaze to the large surface areas of wall.

    6. While paint is still wet, use cheesecloth to "pounce" the surface (figure B) and create a softened effect.
