In this Indoors Out project, Dean Marsico and Derek Stearns transform a little-used backyard into an outdoor room for meditation and relaxation with the addition of a stone-path, seating area, sculpture and an outdoor shower. The final phase in the project: installing the entryway door for the newly designed backyard space. Dean and Derek install a salvaged and refinished door to help provide privacy and security while adding a stylish visual element. Below is a summary of the basic steps as seen in this Indoors Out project, as well as a list of materials and tools used.
Door InstallationTools and materials:
salvaged door
door hardware
sander
screwdriver
primer
paint
Note: The quantities needed for each of these materials vary with your own particular application. For your specific project, Dean and Derek suggest taking the dimensions to a local materials supplier, where they will calculate the amount of each product needed.
Steps:
- Acquire a salvaged door. Cut it to the appropriate dimensions for your door opening. In this case, five inches was cut from the bottom of the door so that it would clear the ground once it the door was hung.
- Sand the door and prime it.
- Tip: Tint the primer so that that you'll need fewer coats of paint to get an even finish.
- Paint the door. It may take more that one coat to completely cover and get the deepest color.
- Hang the door using hardware that will weather well.
