  • Move It Outside, Pt. 5: Spiral Staircase and Fire Pit
  • Jay Baker and the Move It Outside crew finish up the backyard transformation with the installation of an outdoor spiral staircase and fire pit.

    (Continued from page 2)

  • Use a trowel and mortar to attach cap blocks to the top of the cinderblocks. Use the trowel to tap the caps into place and remove any excess mortar, making sure each piece is level. The pieces lining the interior may need to be measured and cut down to the correct size. This creates the base for the field stones. Allow these to set up and dry (figure E).

  • Add dirt to fill in the area around the fire pit to level the ground (figure F).

  • Using mortar and a trowel attach manufactured stone to the exterior sides of the fire pit. Cover the top of the fire pit with field stone, once again using mortar and a trowel (figures G and H). Measure and cut the stone accordingly and secure in place using the mortar.

    Installing the propane connection

  • Connect the gas line to the regulator using Teflon tape.

Note: Professional assistance is recommended for this procedure.

  • Top off the fireplace with gas logs and embers. For our fire pit, we opted for lava rock.
