Enhancing the outdoor lightposts with stucco
    Materials:

    mortar mix
    quick setting concrete
    sand
    cinderblocks

    Steps:

    • Remove the pre-existing lamp fixtures and light bulbs so that cinderblocks can easily slide down the lampposts (figures Q and R).

    • Cut a standard cinderblock in half using a concrete saw.

    • After preparing the mortar mix, use a trowel to lay a mortar bed around the foot of the lamppost.

    • Slide the cinderblock down the lamppost and set it in place on top of the mortar bed

Tip Gently 'wiggle' the cinderblock to get mortar firmly lodged in the rough surface of the cinderblock.

    • Use a trowel or a spade to 'tap' the top of the cinderblock until the block is as level as possible.

    • When the block is completely level (figure S), lay a mortar bed along the top of the cinderblock. Slide another block down the lamppost and repeat the aforementioned procedure until the stack of cinderblocks reaches the top of the lamppost.

    • After the lampposts are covered with cinderblocks and the mortar has dried, you can begin the stucco process.

    • Following the instructions on the bag, mix mortar to perfect consistency.

    • Apply a base coat of mortar mix (1/8 to 1/4 inch thick) to each side of the lampposts.

    • Lightly run a rake along the base coat. (This allows the final coat to firmly bond to the lampposts).

    • While the base coat is drying, mix sand into the mortar until the stucco color you desire is created.

    • Then, cover the base coat with a layer of stucco and stipple with a brush/sponge.

    • Lightly run a trowel across the stucco to smooth the 'pitted' surface.

    • Allow ample time for the stucco to dry.
