    Prepare For Grouting

Let your mosaic set overnight. You want to be sure that this mosaic is completely dry before moving onto the next step. Using a small broom, clean any dirt or debris off the design (figure O). Apply a second coat of sealer with a cloth. This second coat will protect the stone when you grout. Let the sealer dry for about 2 to 3 hours.

    Mix Grout

Use a non-sanded grout for a mosaic application. It is thinner and more pliable, and will push into the joints more easily than a sanded grout. Dean and Derek decide to use two colors for this mosaic: black for the bulk of the design, and tan for the face and hands. Mix the grout in a bucket by hand. Remember to wear a mask when you mix.

    Apply Grout

    • Apply the grout with a rubber grout float (figure P). Press the grout firmly into the joints, moving back and forth over the design (figure Q). First apply the black grout and wipe off the excess with a damp sponge. Next, apply the tan grout in the smaller areas.

    • When the entire mosaic is grouted, use clean water and a sponge to wipe it clean (figure R).

    • Let the grout dry and the pool is ready to be filled and enjoyed.
