  • Elvis Tile-Mosaic Pool
  • Long live The King! Dean and Derek create an Elvis tile mosaic for the bottom of a swimming pool.

    Replace Missing Stones

Before you set the mosaic in thinset mortar, look over it carefully and make sure there aren't any missing stones. If there are, replace them as you did before.

    Apply Stone Sealer

Then apply a sealer to the stone (figure I). Dean and Derek use a wet look sealer for natural stone that is oil based. The sealer will bring out the color in the stones and protect the mosaic from any staining when you set it with thinset mortar. Apply the sealer with a cloth and let dry for about three hours.

    Mix The Thinset mortar

Next mix the thinset mortar. In a five-gallon bucket, mix a multi-purpose thinset mortar with water using an electric mixer to avoid splashing (figure J).

Once it's mixed, let it rest for five minutes and then mix it again. This ensures that the thinset is completely mixed and gives it extra strength.

Set The Mosaic With Thinset mortar

    • Because of the size of the Elvis design, Dean and Derek set the mosaic in sections with the help of a couple of assistants. Make sure the mosaic is exactly in place.

    • Lift the section to be set and using a notched trowel, spread a layer of thinset mortar about a quarter of an inch thick underneath (figure K). Make sure to cover the entire area. The notched trowel gives creates raised lines, which create suction and help hold the mosaic in place (figure L).

    • Once you start setting with the thinset mortar, you have about five minutes to set your design. Lay the mosaic down gently and press the stone into the thinset (figure M).

    • Wipe the excess thinset that comes out the edges with your finger or a trowel, and then wipe it with a sponge (figure N). This will give the pool company a smooth edge for their finish work.
