  • Stone Column Entryway
  • Derek and Dean build granite stone columns with bluestone caps to create a grand backyard entry.

    episode DROC-302

    (Continued from page 3)

    Fill In the Joints

After the granite has set up, come back with the jointer and fill in the joints with mortar. Dean and Derek recommend filling in the joints about three quarters of the way full. Rake out the excess mortar using the jointer. With a cheap paintbrush, brush the joints to give them a polished, clean look.

    Fill in Top of Column

After the joints have set, take your mud and fill in the crevices at the top of the column between the veneer and the brick.

    Bluestone Caps

    • Finish off the columns by using pre-cut bluestone. Dean and Derek decided to use square caps: an 18-inch stone on the bottom and a 12-inch piece centered on top .

    • Spread mortar about a half inch thick on top of the columns (figure S).

    • Gently place the larger piece of bluestone on the columns (figure T). The cap should have a one-inch overhang on all sides.

    • Make sure it is centered and level (figure U). You may need to add or remove mortar to level the cap. Add mortar for the second, smaller cap in the center of the first cap. Make sure the 12-inch piece is centered and level.

    • Use your jointer and brush to clean up the edges, and your columns are complete (figure V).
