    Stone Veneer Prep Work

    • The 3/4-inch Tennessee blue-stone (figure A) was selected for it's natural beauty, texture and weight, and to tie in with the existing patio made from the same material.

    • Work begins with mixing the thin-set mortar that will be used to secure the stone veneer (figure B). This epoxy-based mortar should be mixed with mortar to achieve the consistency of cake frosting.

Safety Alert: Wear a dust mask when mixing mortar since the process will create a lot of airborne dust.

    • Before applying thin-set mortar to the cabinet exteriors, wrap the seams and corners of the cabinet unit with fiberglass mesh tape (figure C). Similar in function to taping used on dry-wall, the tape provides good adhesion and makes it easier to achieve a good transition at the corners.

    • Cut away any excess tape using a razor knife (figure D).

    • Once the tape is in place, cover with layer of thin set mortar (figure E). This portion of the job doesn't have to be need; just ensure that you get good coverage. Repeat this process on all of the corner joints and sseams.

    • Since the stones will vary in size, before placing any of the stone take measurements of each area to be covered with the stone (figure F). This will help with the overall installation by serving as a guide when the stones are cut.
