Exterior Facelift: Repairing a Fence From "Weekend Handyman" episode WKH-306

Repairing a Fence

1. Use a reciprocating saw to cut off the gate at the post.

2. Use a post-hole digger (figure A) to pull out the rest of the rotted post.

3. Knock off the old fence panels.

4. Set a new post in the hole and fill in with quick-set concrete and water (figure B -- this is a shot of the demonstration for how quickly this product sets up).

   Tip: You must work quickly to plumb the post because you only have a few minutes to work with it.

5. Use a chalk line to make sure the new post is the same height as the existing posts. Cut the post to size using a circular saw.

6. Use deck screws to attach the panels to the fence posts. Place the screws at a 45-degree angle (figure C).
   
   Note: Regardless of what type of fence you have, you may want to consider staining or sealing it to protect it from the elements. It will make your fence last a lot longer.

7. Top off the fence with a drip cap.

8. Attach the new gate.

With a new fence, siding, window with planter box and shutters and a cupola to top off the garage, these projects have given the backyard a new look that will last a long time!
