In this episode of DIY's Trade School, we follow the education of student mechanic Dillon Hryze (figure A). Dillon has been motorcross racing for years, but this high school student wants to stick with it for life. His goal is to learn the ins and outs of motorcycle repair, and then join a professional motorcross team as a mechanic.

The first stop on Dillon's career path is at Warren Tech High School. Here he learns about small engine repair, starting with basic lawnmowers and eventually moving up to more complicated motorcycles. In this session, Dillon's instructor Ed Baumgard hands him a mower that won't start (figure B). He's to perform a minor tune-up and hopefully get it running again.

Dillon first pulls out the cylinder air filter, which appears to be in good shape. He uses compressed air to clean it (figure C), and then puts it back on the mower. He drains the old oil into a drip pan (figure D) and refills the crankcase with fresh oil to the recommended level (figure E).
