Reggie and Victoria purchased a fixer-upper home. As they begin renovating room-by-room, their first big project is the kitchen. Reggie decides to build his own custom cabinets, spending just over $2,000 on materials. That's a fraction of the cost of purchasing new custom cabinets, which can run upwards of $20,000.

Below is a summary of the basic steps as seen in this project demonstration, as well as a list of tools and materials used.

    Materials and tools:

    wood (variety selected by homeowner)
    table saw
    router table

    measuring tape
    level
    wood glue
    sand paper
    wood stain

Tip: Building custom cabinets requires moderate woodworking skills and a variety of tools.

Safety Alerts: Always wear safety glasses when working with power tools.

    Building the Custom Cabinets

    • Determine the layout of your kitchen. Cut plywood templates to account for appliances (figure A).

    • Build the shells or carcasses of the cabinets (figure B).

    • Build the face frames (figure C) out of solid wood and attach to the front.

    • Build your doors. Raised panel doors are standard.

    • Install your cabinets, stain the doors and faces and hang your cabinet doors with your desired hardware.
