To save on the bottom line Kristen Thomas decides to refinish her old cabinets instead of spending tens of thousands of dollars on brand new cabinets. And with the addition of some quality-built, open shelves, her cabinets have a custom look at a fraction of the price.Below is a summary of the basic steps, as well as a list of tools and materials needed, as seen in this DIY project. Materials and tools: sand paper, sand block or electric sander paint brush paint roller or sprayer drop cloth paint or varnish wood putty new door hinges and handles (recommended)
Safety Alert: When working with spray paints, varnishes and other potentially harmful materials always wear proper safety garments like respirator masks, goggles and gloves.Tip: Paint from top to bottom to minimize drips. Steps: Refinishing Cabinets - Remove any items in cabinets or drawers, and then remove the hardware from drawers and take off the cabinet doors and drawer faces (figure A).
- Take down the cabinet boxes carefully (figure B).
Reattach the cabinet boxes to the new, desired height, securing the cabinet by sinking screws into the studs in the wall (figure C).Fill any unwanted divots or holes on the doors and drawer faces with wood putty (figure D).
Sand cabinet doors, drawer faces, cabinet faces and frames to eliminate old paint, varnish or gloss (figure E).Paint or varnish the doors to the desired finish and replace handles and hardware on drawers and doors and reattach to cabinets (figure F).
