Materials: transom window tape measure vacuum safety glasses dust mask hammer prybar reciprocating saw pencil 2"x6" lumber miter saw level framing nailer 2"x4" lumber drill spade bit Steps: 1. Measure to determine width of rough opening. Remove insulation and break mortar with a hammer. Pry off lath with the claw end of a hammer. Use small bats of new insulation tucked up in the stud cavities to keep the old insulation from falling out. 2. Cut studs with a reciprocating saw; also use the saw to clean up any nails that are left behind. 3. Cut two pieces of 2x6 to length, and nail them together to make a header. Find and mark center on the header and window. Transfer the center of the window to the center of the floor joist above, making sure that it is plumb. Place header at top of wall and secure with framing nailer. 4. Measure distance from top of window to header, and cut 2x4 to length for the sides of the window frame. Place studs in opening at width of window, and fasten them with a framing nailer. Be sure that the trimmer is plumb. Full height studs are nailed to the sides of the trimmer to support the framework. 5. Use a drill with a 3/4-inch spade bit to make pilot holes through the exterior. Cut through siding with a reciprocating saw. Use the studs as a guide. 6. Place window frame in opening, and tap it into place using a hammer and a chunk of 2x4 so as not to damage it. Leave 1/2 inch all the way around. 7. Run a bead of silicone on the inside of the frame and set the glass into place. Wood stop helps to secure the glass.
