Materials and Tools for Building the Center Island:

    tape
    screw gun
    reciprocating saw
    tape measure
    safety glasses
    plywood (1 x)
    pocket hole jig
    drill
    clamps
    wood glue
    finish nailer
    impact driver
    drill
    countersink bit
    finish screws
    angle finder

    1. Tape off the existing island for reference (figure C).

    2. Unscrew cabinet boxes and remove.

    3. Cut off the waste pipe with a reciprocating saw.

    4. Determine the needed width of the new island and mark off with tape.

Note: Be sure plumbing falls within the sink cabinet location.

    5. Clamp a pocket-hole jig (figure D) to a piece of plywood and cut to the correct size. This is used to drill angled holes in the plywood. Drill three or four holes every 8".

    6. Add wood glue to the edge of the 1 x 4 and clamp it to the plywood. Join the pieces together with 1-1/4" pan-head screws.

    7. Set boards on tape, spread glue along edge and nail together with 2" finish nails.

    8. Cut a piece of 1 x 3/4" shorter than the height of the cabinets to use as a nailer (figure E).

    9. Spread glue on the board and set in corner. Nail the side panel.

    10. Cut a triangle corner piece and set on top of the nailer. This will keep the cabinet square.

    11. Drill a pilot hole into the edge of the cabinet base and drive a finish screw into the floor to keep the cabinet securely in place.

    12. Build a plywood base (figure F) to bump up the height of the upper cabinet.

    13. Add wood glue to nailing blocks and set them on the back and sides of the cabinet. Clamp them in place and secure with screws.

    14. Set cabinets in place and use an angle finder to determine the correct angle. Transfer that angle to the fill boards and secure them with a pneumatic nailer.

    15. Glue the sides of the cabinets and attach the fill boards with a finish nailer.
