- Unscrew cabinet boxes and remove.
- Cut off the waste pipe with a reciprocating saw.
- Determine the needed width of the new island and mark off with tape.
Note: Be sure plumbing falls within the sink cabinet location. - Clamp a pocket-hole jig (figure D) to a piece of plywood and cut to the correct size. This is used to drill angled holes in the plywood. Drill three or four holes every 8".
- Add wood glue to the edge of the 1 x 4 and clamp it to the plywood. Join the pieces together with 1-1/4" pan-head screws.
- Set boards on tape, spread glue along edge and nail together with 2" finish nails.
- Cut a piece of 1 x 3/4" shorter than the height of the cabinets to use as a nailer (figure E).
- Spread glue on the board and set in corner. Nail the side panel.
- Cut a triangle corner piece and set on top of the nailer. This will keep the cabinet square.
- Drill a pilot hole into the edge of the cabinet base and drive a finish screw into the floor to keep the cabinet securely in place.
- Build a plywood base (figure F) to bump up the height of the upper cabinet.
- Add wood glue to nailing blocks and set them on the back and sides of the cabinet. Clamp them in place and secure with screws.
- Set cabinets in place and use an angle finder to determine the correct angle. Transfer that angle to the fill boards and secure them with a pneumatic nailer.
- Glue the sides of the cabinets and attach the fill boards with a finish nailer.
