  • Butcher Countertop for Desk Area
  • From "Kitchen Renovations"
    episode DKTN-413

In this third segment of the final "Mom's Kitchen -- Traditional Update (3 of 3)" episode, host Paul Ryan and his brother Mark use a cardboard template to cut the butcher-block top for the desk. They round the front edges of the countertop and then make vent holes for the radiator.

    Sizing the Butcher Block

    1. Cut a cardboard template the shape of the countertop.

    2. Place the template (figure A) on the butcher block and line up the back edge so it is even.

    3. Mark a cut line and clamp a cutting guide to the butcher block.

    4. Follow the guide with a circular saw (figure B).

    5. Follow up with a belt sander to finish the job.

Cutting Air Holes and a Curved Corner in Butcher Block

    1. Tape an outline of the area where the air holes will be.

    2. Use plates as a template (figure C) for the rounded corner and line up with the edges of the butcher-block until you find one that creates the right size curve.

    3. Tape the edge of the plate to protect it, and then mark a cut line along that edge.

    4. Cut a cardboard template of the curve edge and tape it to the butcher block.

    5. Use a jig saw to make this cut (figure D), being sure to stay outside the line so you don't damage the butcher block.

    6. Near the end of the cut, reverse the direction of the saw. This also helps avoid damage to the butcher block.

    7. Follow up with a belt sander to smooth out the curve.

    8. For the air holes, use blue tape to cover the area where the holes will be cut so you won't damage the surface.

    9. Mark the holes 4" apart and 3" up from the edge of the butcher block.

    10. Tape a centering jig guide attachment (figure E) and drill the first inch down with the jig as your guide.

    11. Remove the jig and finish the holes all the way through the butcher block.

    12. Varnish the new curved edge of the butcher block and the inside of the air holes for protection.

In the final segment the finishing touches, including installing the appliances, are completed.
