    Slate Countertops

    1. Dry fit the sink.

    2. You want to mount the sink before you secure the countertop, so use the countertop as a template and mark where you need to cut the cabinets for the sink.

    3. Remove the counter and cut out the excess lumber with a reciprocating saw on both sides of sink cutout (figure A).

    4. Remove the sink and flip over the countertop face down onto sawhorses.

    5. With a clean cloth, wipe down the countertop where the sink will touch with acetone so the silicone sticks to the surface.

    6. Slide the sink in place and trace outline with a pencil (figure B).

    7. Remove the sink and run a bead of silicone inside the mark.

    8. Set the sink in place.

    9. If the counter was predrilled and pre-anchored, just put the clips into place and screw them in (figure C).

    10. When everything is secured, lift the countertop with sink and place it in its new home.

    11. Take out the drawers and silicone countertop in place.

Sealing the Seam on the Countertop

    1. Place blue painters tapes on the seam.

    2. Score the tape on the seam with a utility knife (figure D).

    3. Use a carpenter square to make two to three reference marks.

    4. Pull touching counters about 3/4" apart.

    5. With a wood shim, butter the inside of the countertops with the epoxy.

    6. Push countertop back in place making sure you reline the reference marks.

    7. Drag a razor blade over the tape to work epoxy into the seams and make sure there are no air pockets (figure E).

    8. Peel off the tape once the epoxy is dry.
