Perforated Backsplash From "Kitchen Renovations" episode DKTN-413

In this first segment of the last "Updated Traditional -- Mom's Kitchen," host Paul Ryan and the contractor (Shane) install a perforated backsplash for the range; plus, two butcher-block countertops are installed on either side of the range.

Perforated Backsplash

1. Cut a skin of beadboard (figure A) to cover the wall so if you see through the holes on pegboard the background will match the cabinetry.

2. Mark the wall.

3. Apply a bead of construction adhesive to back of beadboard.

4. Secure the panel with 1-1/4" deck screws.

5. Raise the perforated panel to the wall (figure B) and secure to the studs with 1-1/4" deck screws.

Butcher-Block Cabinet Tops

Paul's mother decided to go with maple, wood-welded butcher-block cabinet tops (figure C) for the two cabinets that go to the left and right of the new stove.

1. Add 100-percent silicone to the corners and edges of the cabinets.

   Note: It's important that the edge of the butcher block is "even" with the edge of the face frame.

2. Press the butcher block down into place and be sure to wipe away any excess silicone.

In the next segment the new countertops are brought in and the sink is mounted.
