In the final segment of the first episode of "Updated Traditional (1 of 3), host Paul Ryan and the contractor create a 45-degree reference line for the tile using the rule of 3, 4, 5. They apply the tile adhesive and then start setting the tile creating a four square diamond pattern.

    1. To create four square pattern on an angle with the tiles, you want the tops of angles or diamonds to line up straight across the room so you have symmetry.

    2. Make a perfect 45-degree angle for a starting line. First, you need to make a 90-degree angle using the rule of 3, 4, 5. This says a triangle with sides of three feet, four feet, and five feet creates a perfect 90-degree angle (figure A).

    3. Lay out your pattern to determine the exact placement.

    4. Mark the first tile location.

    5. Apply the recommended tile adhesive using a 1/32" V-notched trowel (figure B). It leaves behind a minimal amount of glue. You want 100-percent coverage on the underlayment. The adhesive needs about 20 minutes of open time to flash. The adhesive is ready when it goes from creamy to clear.

    6. Make sure the tiles are clean and start on your mark, setting the tile on the reference line. Take you time to make sure you have perfect alignment. The tiles stick on contact but can be adjusted.

    7. Work your way into the room, kneeling carefully as you work. You can walk on tile but make sure your shoes are clean.

    8. Use a tile cutter (figure C) for vinyl composite tile. Mark your tile and use a speed square as a guide for a straight cut. Use a utility knife and carpenter's square if you need to cut a size that won't fit into the tile cutter.

    9. Roll the floor with a 100-lb. roller.

    10. Put a sealer on the floor when finished.

In the next episode of "Updated Traditional (2 of 3) Paul and his brothers make progress as they install the new semi-custom cabinets, the new dual sinks and a customized work desk so Mom can have an organized communication center.
