    1. The floor needs to be as smooth and clean as possible to prep for the underlayment. Pull up every staple.

    2. Lay out full sheets of underlayment (figure A). Use the underlayment with a premarked stapling schedule so that you will know you get the recommended number of staples.

    3. Mark the areas that need cutouts and use a jigsaw to make the cuts.

    4. For a professional look you want your underlayment and flooring to fit under the doorjamb. Use a power jamb saw (figure B) or a Japanese pull saw to undercut the doorjamb.

    5. Secure the underlayment with a pneumatic stapler, using 1-3/8" 1/4" crown staples so you penetrate into subfloor by at least an inch.

    6. Pound down the staples with a hammer.

Note: Protruding staples will show through the vinyl flooring.

    7. Fill all the seams with gypsum-based skim coat (figure C).

    8. After about 15 minutes the gypsum skim coat will be dry. Go over the seams with an orbital sander, smoothing out the high points and feathering the edges.

In the final segment of the first "Updated Traditional (1 of 3) episode, Paul and the contractor start setting the tile creating a four square diamond pattern.
