Mom's Kitchen Design Paul walks through the renovation design with his mother and found out that she wants the following:
- A new vent for the stove.
- New cabinets that are lowered so she can reach them "without" a stool.
- A double sink.
- A pull-out drawer under the sink so she'll know everything that is underneath.
- A communication space (appointment calendar, checking, phone, etc.) that desperately needs a total renovation from what she has now (figure A) to an organized, modern update (figure B).

Next Paul sat with the kitchen designer, Anne Dailey, to discuss the plan for his mother's new cooking and eating spaces. Anne says the current layout works well, but there do need to be the updates mentioned above. Here are Anne's suggestions: - Go with a vinyl 4 x 4 checkerboard floor pattern (figure C) that will be laid on a diagonal.
- The old white, metal cabinets must go, and they will be replaced with maple wood cabinets (figure D) that have a deep cognac finish -- and some red accents at the sink base and stove hood.
- The countertops (figure E) will be slate with a "honed" -- or polished -- finish. The slate is from Vermont, which means it's not as porous and much more durable.
- Paul's mother loves to be organized so instead of doing away with the outdated pegboard above the stove, Anne suggests a perforated stainless steel for a modern look while still being able to have everything at her fingertips.
In the next segment, Paul and one of his brothers (Tom) get started on the demolition by removing the old cabinets, vent hood, sink and countertops.
