    Meet and Greet

Working with volunteer parents, host Paul Ryan creates a bright, welcoming new kitchen in the children's floor of a hospital. In this one-episode makeover, DIY will address how to create a kitchen that is American Disability Act (ADA) compliant but still feels like home.

Kids often stay in the Fairview-University Children's Hospital (figure A) cancer center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, for months on end, and when they want mom's home-cooked food instead of hospital fare, the kitchen they used was pretty dreary (as the top photo, right, can attest). But Paul and his helpers change all that by creating a kitchen that truly looks and feels like a home away from home.

Merilee and Doug Jahnke have walked these corridors many, many times. Their daughter Laura was a senior in high school when she was diagnosed with bone cancer. Laura spent two years in and out of treatment -- and was often in the hospital for long stretches of time. Thankfully, she is now cancer-free and just started her freshman year of college.

Merilee and Doug are back to lend Paul a hand in renovating the dull kitchen into a modern, practical space that's not only pleasing to the eye but user-friendly.

The "old" room featured vinyl furniture, a single microwave, a sink and not enough of elbow room. Luckily, some of the work, including new walls and ceiling and the electrical and plumbing rough-in, was already done before Paul arrived on the scene. He and his helpers have a blank canvas (figure B) to renovate.

The overall layout (figure C) incorporates good maneuvering space around the counters and appliances -- at least a 5' turning radius for a wheelchair. In order for the kitchen to be "fully" accessible, the cabinets have higher toe kicks (9" instead of the standard 4") and the countertops will be slightly lower (34" instead of the standard 36"). For the sink and stove, there will be enough knee space for a wheelchair to fit under them.

The main objective is to pick out materials that feel as homey and comfortable as possible. For example, there will also be a fireplace and seating area (figure D)

In the next segment, Paul and the volunteers decide on the vinyl tile flooring layout and then begin the installation.
