Grouting From "Kitchen Renovations" episode DKTN-409

In this first segment of the final episode of DIY's "Rustic Contemporary" kitchen renovation, Heidi (homeowner) determines the grout color for the glass tile backsplash. Then, host Paul Ryan gives Heidi a step-by-step lesson in grouting.

Note: Choosing grout colors is just as important as the color of the tiles, and Heidi had many to choose from on the grout chart. In the end she chose a neutral color (figure A) to fit in with the tiles.

Grouting

1. First lay down the rosin paper to protect the counter, taping the seams to the edges of the tile.

2. Then, mix modified grout with water using a paddle mixer. Modified grout has polymers in it that help prevent shrinking and cracking.

3. Let the grout slake (rest and thicken up) for about ten minutes and then stir again until it reaches a peanut butter like consistency.

4. Using a float, apply the grout at a 45-degree angle (figure B). Make sure to really work the grout in between the spaces.

   Tip: You may want to consider using a margin float, which is great for using around edges of the grout.

5. After letting the grout set for about 15-20 minutes, take a sponge and working at a 45-degree angle to the grout joint, wipe away any excess grout. Try not to pull any grout out of the joint.

In the next segment the contractor helps install the faucets, and the refrigerator is moved into place.
