    Trough Sink

    1. The trough sink is dropped in place (figure A).

    2. Then comes the island countertop. It weighs in at a daunting 557 pounds. This will be the largest single slab of marble (figure B) in the kitchen.

    3. The installation is pretty much the same as for the other countertops.

    Handmade Glass Tiles

    • The handmade glass tiles (figure C) for the backsplash are made from recycled bottle glass. Making the tiles starts with crushed recycled bottle glass called "cullet" (figure D). The company goes through 100 tons of it a month.

    • The raw glass is melted in a furnace over 2000 degrees until it becomes molten. Color is added at this stage.

    • The molten glass is then carried straight to the press. Different molds are put in the press to create different sizes and shapes of the tile (figure E).

    • After the glass cools, it is then hand cut into individual tiles, which are then ground down until the edges are smooth. Smaller tiles are laid up in sheets to make the installation easier. The tiles cost more because of all the artisan hand work.

In this last segment, Paul and Darcy begin setting the glass tile using a procedure to hide the comb marks so it doesn't show through the glass. They also demonstrate how to cut glass tile with the wet saw.
