    episode DKTN-407

In this final segment of the second episode of "Rustic Contemporary," host Paul Ryan and Darcy (homeowner) mark the location of the vent hole inside and outside the house. They set in new blocking that will hold the vent hood hangers. Then they cut a vent hole through the wall for the installation.

    Installing the Vent Hood

    • Remove the face of the cabinet where the exhaust vent hole needs to go.

    • Outside the house, expose the framing in the wall. Remove the siding, house wrap and sheathing from the exterior of the house in the area of the vent hole. Pull back the insulation and remove any bracing that may be in the way. Always wear gloves when handling insulation.

    • From inside, run a keyhole saw through to mark the location of the hole.

    • Toenail in the blocking (figure A) so it is in the correct position to hold the vent hood hangers.

    • Using the vent elbow as a template (figure B), mark the hole placement outside.

    • Cut a hole through the studs with a reciprocating saw.

    • Finish the hole in the interior drywall and dry fit the elbow.

    • Use a paper template to mark the location of the hangers and screw them in.

    • After connecting the electrical, place the elbow in the hole and then slide the vent hood into place, making sure it connects to the elbow and resting on the hangers (figure C).

In the next episode (3 of 4) of "Rustic Contemporary," professionals are brought in to help Paul and the homeowners install the custom Guatemalan Green Marble countertops and sink. The big slab countertop that includes a trough sink for the center island is installed, and the glass tile backsplash -- made from recycled glass -- is set in a diamond pattern.
