In this first segment of the second episode of "Rustic Contemporary," Heidi (homeowner) gives host Paul Ryan a recap of the decorative trim work and the finishing work on the hardwood floor. Then she shows Paul the "factory-custom" cabinetry they chose -- and then the installation of the first section of upper cabinets begins. [Materials List and step-by-step instructions are below.]

- To protect the finished wood floor while working, cover it with house wrap first and then lay down 1/4" Masonite sheets (figure A). Simply cut them to size and then lay them out and tape together to prevent shifting while working.
- Measure where the bottom of the upper cabinets will be. Shoot a laser line across the wall and mark several spots.
- Hang a ledger board along the line (figure B) to support the upper cabinets during installation -- make sure to screw it into the studs in the wall.
- Place the first cabinet on the ledger, and attach it to the studs in the wall with cabinet screws. If it's difficult to get at the back of the cabinet, use a long bit extension to drive in the cabinet screws.
- For especially heavy pieces, a special cabinet lift called a "T-Jack" (figure C) can be used to help hold the cabinets at the proper height until the screws go in.
In the next segment, a kitchen designer discusses the details of the cabinet plans, and the toe-kick platforms and lower cabinets are installed.
