  • Window Trim
  • From "Kitchen Renovations"
    episode DKTN-406

In this final segment of the first episode of "Rustic Contemporary," host Paul Ryan and Darcy (the homeowner) use some creative woodworking techniques for the window trim. Since the wood is so hard, they need to use screws. They fix the window stool by removing excess drywall and attach the trim around the windows.

[Materials List and step-by-step instructions are below.]

    1. Cut the sill piece to length.

    2. If the wood for the trim is too hard you'll need to predrill holes for screws.

    3. Since the sill is not sitting flush with the window and drywall (figure A), some of the drywall needs to be cut. Hold the stool in position and draw an outline on the drywall. Use a utility knife to score the outline. Remove excess drywall with a small chisel.

    4. Screw the stool into the window frame using trim screws with a torx drive -- these have very small heads (figure B) the torx drive provides better contact on smaller screw heads.

    5. Attach all the trim pieces around the window with 1-1/4" finish nails -- a nail gun will speed up this process.

    6. Use wood glue to attach the small finishing ends of the trim.

    7. Putty the countersink holes.

In the next episode factory custom cabinets are installed, the center island is built and the high-style vent hood is installed.
