Finishing Touches From "Kitchen Renovations" episode DKTN-405

In this final segment of "Southwestern Kitchen," host Paul Ryan finishes off the homeowner's new "Southwest Kitchen" by installing copper backsplashes with construction adhesive. A new copper sink with an old-fashioned copper faucet and a vintage-style stove complete the new look.

Installing Copper Backsplashes

1. Install a batten board on the wall (figure A) to support the weight of the backsplash while the adhesive dries.

2. Apply premium construction adhesive to the back of the backsplash panel. Make sure the adhesive covers 90-percent of the backsplash.

3. Use a 6" drywall knife to smooth out the adhesive.

4. Put the backsplash in place on the wall, applying pressure to the copper to smooth it out and make sure the adhesive bonds to the wall.

5. Add a second board (figure B) as a precaution until the adhesive dries. Slide a cloth between the board and the backsplash to protect the copper from scratches. Slip a shim in behind the batten board to increase pressure, insuring the adhesive bonds.

6. Repeat with the sink backsplash.

7. To finish the project the new copper sink, faucet and sprayer are installed by a professional plumber -- and the new stove is wired up and installed.
