    Hanging the New Vent Hood

Usually when hanging a new vent the motor would go first and then the trim, but for this particular project Paul decided to hang the cowling first and then add the mechanics.

    1. In order to hang the cowling, locate the studs, mark them and mark a vertical reference line (figure A). Fit the vent into place.

    2. Put the hood in place and secure it with temporary screws. Mark up from the stud reference lines, using a level to mark the inside of the hood, following the reference line.

    3. Drill pilot holes along the line, then screw the hood into place.

    4. Insert the motor, which is secured with nuts and bolts (figure B), according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    5. Wire the receptacle for the vent as you would any common household electrical outlet.

Note: If you're uncomfortable with electrical work, don't hesitate to call a professional.

    6. Put on the trim housing assembly, plug it in and add the filters (figure C).

The glass inserts add elegance to the cabinet doors, and they didn't take long at all to do!
Inserting Glass Panels into Existing Cabinet Doors

The glass-panel inserts (figure D) were custom designed by Leah via a computer software program, and they arrived in the mail in less than five days.

    1. Route a dado on the back of the cabinet door by making a plunge cut on a router table. Mark the fence (figure E) to use as a template so you know when to stop.

    2. Use a scribe block that is made out of metal (figure F) to draw a uniform cutting line on the front.

    3. Make a plunge cut on the front with a spade bit.

    4. With the variable speed scroll saw, cut out the center.

    5. When finished, go back and clean up the corners with the scroll saw.

    6. Sand off the edges and touch up with paint.

    7. Then insert the glass panel and use a glazing gun to attach it to the cabinet door.

    8. Hang the doors back in place on the cabinets.
