Note: Leah and her father prepped the kitchen by getting rid everything she didn't want, including the old appliances, sink, cabinet doors, countertops, etc. Paul stepped in to help with the old vent hood.

The plan for the new kitchen will include lots of copper -- backsplash, hardware, vent hood, faucet and sink -- and hybrid red-hued eucalyptus countertops and amber glass treatments for some of the cabinet doors over the peninsula.

    Removing the Old Vent Hood

    1. Remove the old vent hood assembly. Use a Japanese saw (figure A) to cut into the cabinet's face frame. Once through, use a pry bar to pull it loose.

    2. With a reciprocating saw, work through the shelf and bust it out with a hammer.

    3. Cut out the fill piece from the old range hood with the Japanese saw, cutting right up to the trim. Finish off with a reciprocating saw.

    4. Cut off the old vent with a rotary tool (figure B) and tin snips.
