  • Cabinets and Countertops
  • From "Kitchen Renovations"
    episode DKTN-403

In this final segment of the third episode of "Contemporary Kitchen Expansion," host Paul Ryan and Keith (the homeowner) install the base cabinets. The countertop installers arrive and bring in the honed granite. They make the cutout for the drop-in cook top and install the countertops.

The Materials list and step-by-step instructions are below.

As the renovation is nearing an end the kitchen is starting to take shape!
    Installing the Cabinets and Countertops

    1. To install the base cabinet, determine the high point of the wall.

    2. Set the cabinets in place (figure A) and level them front to back, shimming them to make sure they are even.

    3. Secure the cabinets to the wall with 3" cabinet screws.

    4. The Brazilian honed-granite countertops (figure B) were done by professionals. The cutouts for the sink are made at the shop since the edges will be polished -- they will show with the under mount sink.

Note: Honed granite means it isn't polished -- and thus, it doesn't shine. And believe it or not, it's a bit more expensive.

    5. Use a circular saw with a diamond blade to make the cutout for the drop-in cook top.

    6. Add a bead of silicone to secure the granite in place.

    7. Make a bridge with pieces of tape (figure C) to protect the wet seam from being accidentally touched.

In the next (final of four) episode Paul and the homeowners install the new vent. The undermount sink and faucet are hooked up. They finish off the cabinets by adding the hardware and inserting glass in the upper doors. Then the renovation is completed when the contemporary stainless steel appliances are brought in.
