    1. The basic principles of lighting are:

      • Location of down lighting is critical -- cans have to be in an appropriate place and have enough number of cans so that the lighting overlaps.

      • Adding a dimmer to be able to control the lights.

      • Adding in a few pendants to finish off the space.

    2. Develop a plan (figure A) for your lighting.

    3. Make a reference line for can light location. Measure out to the edge of where one can light will go, make a reference mark at that line, go to the far end of the room and make a mark at the same distance out from the same wall. Use a laser to create a reference line that passes through both marks (figure B).

    4. To install a light mounting fixture at the joists adjust the position of the lighting fixture until your reference laser line runs just along the edge of the opening of the mounting bracket. The bottom edge of the mounting tabs should be flush with the bottom of the ceiling joists.

    5. Tap the mounting tabs into the joist to hold the fixture temporarily into place.

    6. Drive 1" screws through all four brackets to hold it secure (figure C). With the sliding brackets you can make adjustments.

In the next segment Paul and Keith attach the switch boxes and drill holes in the joists for the new line for the pendant lighting.
